Grandparents…they are like Disneyland. A weekend away from Mom and Dad, a place where the rules usually don’t apply, the fridge is always full of Eskimo Pies, your own play room stocked full of toys awaits you each visit, and if you were like my grandparents, a Leprechaun who left quarters in my shoes or a bunny on my doorstep! Luckily I had Papa, Gama, Grandma and Grandpa who filled my childhood with such wonders and more. Life goes on and its inevitable that you reach the day where your heartbreaks and you say goodbye to your beloved Papa or Gama. Its been over 10 years since my Papa passed away and I still miss him and our dates when he picked me up at the door with a corsage.
Papa and Gama Alexander and Grandma Geringer have gone, and I miss them. Grampa Geringer is chugging along and toting himself (slowly) into work everyday at 95 years old. And why wouldn’t he? He built a business out of his garage 35 years ago and now it is its own force in the industry. Go on with your bad self grandpa. Grandfather to 5 grandkids, and 8 great grandkids he has much to pass on to the little Geringer gum shoes. And so he wrote a book! We each received a copy of the forward at Christmas last year which was his official announcement of the literature. I was proud, I was excited, I was anxious to read! My Grampa may be 95, but he is as sharp as a bee-sting and can tell you stories of being 12 years old and sneaking sips of beer off the tap in his Uncle’s Bar on a street in Chicago.
To my surprise you can find his book on Amazon.com. We wouldn’t expect to actually sell a truck load of copies, but it is nice to know that he put into a time capsule, his own story to be passed down to the generations to come. If you read closely you will notice that there are two Chapter 21’s which makes it cute. Amelie loves her books and Im thrilled that she can pull from her collection on the shelf, just next to Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, a story about Great Grampa.
